Willapa Valley 61, Ocosta 30
Three different players scored in double figures for Willapa Valley in a 61-30 win over Ocosta on Tuesday in Westport.
The Vikings (6-6, 4-1 1B Coastal) remained locked in a three-way tie for first place in the 1B Coastal League by sharing the basketball, which was a point of emphasis from Valley head coach Dawn Keeton entering the game.
“We wanted to work on better passing and finding a better shot selection,” said Keeton, whose team recorded 12 assists and reduced its turnovers to 13 in the win. “We did a lot better with our possessions. … We shared the ball exceptionally well, which created lots of opportunities for other teammates.”
Valley led 23-8 after one quarter of play – converting four 3-pointers in the frame –and had the game well in hand by halftime, leading by 25 at 38-13.
Freshman Tylar Keeton led the Vikings with 15 points with junior guard Lauren Matlock (10 points) and junior forward Rilyn Channell (10 pts.) also scoring in double figures for Valley.
“We needed to help our teammates out and create better shots for everybody,” said Coach Keeton, who said the strategy was to utilize the entire court on Tuesday. “We were having a tendency to stay on one side of the court and by reversing the ball, we were able to get the ball inside more to our fairly-tall players. We wanted to get inside the paint and give those people opportunities then kick it back out and move it around.”
Valley went 23 of 52 from the field (44%) and shot 65% from the free-throw line (11-17).
Ocosta (1-8, 0-4) was led by sophomore guard Peyten Morris with 11 points and five rebounds).
Sophomore forward Elly Mirante added eight points, eight rebounds, four blocks and four steals for Ocosta.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Willapa Valley 50, Ocosta 29
Willapa Valley remained in sole possession of first place in the 1B Coastal League with a 50-29 victory over Ocosta on Tuesday at Ocosta High School.
The Vikings (10-2, 4-0 1B Coastal) led 16-9 after a low-scoring first half and 28-17 after three quarters of play.
Valley’s offense got going in the fourth quarter with 22 points – led by senior guard Nathan Fluke’s nine points – to close out the battle of the two teams sitting atop the league standings.
“This was a great league win for us on the road. I thought we were sloppy offensively tonight, but our defense was excellent,” Valley head coach Derek Rask said. “We finally got a little bit of a rhythm on offense in the fourth quarter to close the game out, but I thought our effort on the defensive end ultimately won us the game.”
Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby agreed.
“Well, tonight we got it handed to us. Valley brought physicality, which we matched for the most part in defense and rebounding, but we did not match it on offense,” said Quinby, whose team shot 20% from the floor on 10-of-51 shooting. “Some of it was nerves, some of it was Valley’s defense and some of it was just missing shots we normally make. … Valley executed well in the fourth quarter when we left our base defense and tried to force the issue.”
Fluke scored a game-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds.
“We did not do a great job of limiting his looks,” Quinby said of Fluke. “I was proud of our effort overall, but we definitely will go back to the drawing board on offense and work on finishing against physical teams.”
Blane King also scored in double digits for the Vikings with 14 points.
Ocosta (8-4, 2-1) was led by senior Kayden Turner with 10 points.
The Wildcats had 37 rebounds – 17-5 on the offensive glass – and committed 19 turnovers.
