Hoquiam’s John Sand overcame plenty of adversity — a broken jaw, high heat and nearly all of the state 1A boys golf field — before a one-hole playoff decided the state 1A boys golf individual title on Wednesday afternoon.
After shooting an even-par 72, Sand was tied with Cle Elem-Roslyn’s Nick Baker at 142 after 36 holes. In a one-hole playoff, Baker sank a birdie putt to edge Sand for the state individual title at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Hoquiam’s boys team, which consisted of Sand and Josh Burgher, finished third overall in the state 1A team title with 69 points. Cle Elum-Roslyn won the state team title as well with 81 points and South Whidbey took second with 73 1/2 points.
“This is our first state hardware from boys golf in school history, so that is nice,” HHS head coach Larry Dublanko said. “For John, I would call his play heroic. He isn’t saying much about (the injury) and he won’t blame this on that. He played very stout golf today. He feels bad, but we are all very proud of his efforts today.”
Sand competed in the final round on Wednesday in considerable pain, according to Dublanko. Sand learned he fractured his upper jaw when a 6-iron snapped in his hands during a practice round on Monday afternoon.
Sand played both rounds with the fracture, as well as a split lower lip, in 90-plus degree heat. He held a two-stroke lead entering the final holes of the day after managing the wind and weather very well.
On the 16th hole, a par 3 layout, Sand came up short and took a double bogey. After a par on the 17th hole, he hit a massive drive that left him with a 30-yard shot to the green on the long, par-5 18th hole.
However, Sand four-putted for par and Baker came in at the same time tied to set up the one-hole playoff. In the playoff, Sand needed a solid recovery shot to get onto the green and settled for a par. Baker got onto the green in two and two-putted for birdle for the win.
“What hurt John the most today was the short game around the greens on those two holes,” Dublanko said. “He was devestated when he four-putted the 18th hole. That was very uncharacteristic of him.”
Burgher started the day in 16th place and stayed strong on a tougher course on Wednesday, shooting an 83 for a 161 two-day total.
“Josh played very well today; he was pleased with the efforts,” Dublanko said. “This was his first state tournament and he kept his cool very well. I’m proud of these kids.”
