Three quarters of the Gleason family — Parker with his parents Damon and Gina — stand for a photo at Boomers Fireworks. Pierce, Damon’s and Gina’s daughter, also works at the business but wasn’t at the tent Tuesday morning. The Gleasons have run the business in the white tent that sits across from Billy’s Bar and Grill on Heron Street since a well-timed vacation to Harden, Montana. Damon and Gina, with then-infant son Parker, met Matt Elbue, who wowed them with a firework display and soon turned it into a recruitment trip as he got them interested in running their own fireworks business. 20 years later, Boomers Fireworks is going strong and Damon loves working it with his family.

13-year-old rock photographer Jameson Nebel, left, shakes the impressive right hand of Kathy Moore. Moore, a guitarist for The Bona Fide Band featuring Krist Novoselic. While Moore shredded on stage with her complex and powerful leads, Nebel shot from the crowd the important moments of the set. So happy after the exchange with Moore, Nebel, of Hoquiam, ran up to her mom Kimmy and hugged her. World Music Day won’t just be for famous musicians to land in Aberdeen and play for what is expected to receive a lot of fanfare. It’ll mark the first glimpse of the “Unplugged” space inside The Music Project building — 121 W. Wishkah St. Lee and Dani Bacon, plus other “essential” workers, have been working tirelessly in order to make the space available for music lovers. The sign to the right that reads “Grungeology” will be seen as people head from “The Green Room” to “Unplugged.” At the end of the hallway is the iconic highway sign that the late-Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic once made famous with a photo decades ago.

World Music Day 2023 saw tens of musicians and music enthusiasts arrive on South K Street, pictured, and West Wishkah Street. The musicians played acoustically on the sidewalks. This year however, World Music Day 2024 is going through “unbridled growth,” according to Wil Russoul, one of the main organizers for the event, which will feature Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musicians, international musicians, and “more surprises” who are on the way. The event has outgrown its two-street size, as Don Stone will perform at Westport Winery, and other venues throughout Aberdeen will host shows.

The building is the 21st to be added to the city’s historic register. A sparse crowd showed up on Thursday night to the second open house for the North Aberdeen Bridge Project. There’s a substantial funding gap between the $23 million in grants the city received for the bridge replacement and the cost of option 2B. “If (the) city is able to secure commitment for approximately $10 million additional private funding prior to the June 26, 2024 city council meeting, city staff will recommend Option 2B as (the) preferred alternative,” stated one of the boards that showed information about the costs for the bridge alternatives.
