Annual dinner, auction to help fund senior outings

Proceeds will help fund services and activities at both the Aberdeen and Hoquiam senior centers

The Aberdeen Senior Center will host its annual benefit dinner and auction Saturday.

An Autumn Affair 2017 will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Aberdeen Museum of History, 117 E. Third St. Proceeds will help fund services and activities at both the Aberdeen and Hoquiam senior centers, according to event volunteer Sharon Balin.

In addition to meal services and kitchen equipment maintenance, the money raised Saturday also will help defray the cost of trips organized throughout the year by Lonnie Wild, who chairs the benefit dinner. Buses have taken groups to Seattle to see ballgames, ride the Great Wheel and take a Ducks tour, and they’ve even taken the train to Mt. Rainier.

Because of this fundraiser, “the seniors only have to pay a small part of the actual cost,” said Balin.

In addition to live and silent auctions, the evening will include a bake sale, a 50-50 raffle and dollar grab bags. Among the major auction items are a two-day trip to a ski chalet near Bend, Oregon; two days at the Chateau Westport; and one day at the Tradewinds on the Bay in Tokeland.

Balin said several local businesses have donated gift certificates and other items to be sold, including an assortment of cranberry items from Ocean Spray. Private donors gave bicycles, gift basket elements and a variety of other items.

“I saw a really cool model of an 1878 pilot sloop from New York City,” Balin said.

The dinner alone may be worth the price of admission, she added. Jeannie Holt, who cooks at Emerson Manor, will be cooking. “It’s a pretty darn good lasagne,” she said.

Ticket are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. For tickets or more information, call the Aberdeen Senior Center at 360-533-3311.
