The American Legion in Aberdeen is hosting a bingo fundraiser for the Grays Harbor Genealogical Society on Saturday.
In June’s Armory building fire, the genealogical society’s office was destroyed, along with 80,000 historic obituaries, 70,000 funeral records and copies of birth and death certificates, according to the group’s president Gary Parfitt.
“We’re 99 percent sure there’s nothing to be saved,” Parfitt said. “This fundraiser is so we can buy new equipment after we find a permanent place.”
Since the office was burned, Parfitt said the group has set up a temporary office in the Hoquiam Library, and the organization is already working to collect obituaries both old and new for their collection.
On Saturday, there will be two bingo sessions and raffles at the American Legion Hall, located at 112 W. First St. in Aberdeen. Doors open at 2 p.m. and the first game starts at 4 p.m.
It’s an all ages event, and both bingo sessions will have raffle tables with prizes like TVs, barbecues and outdoor equipment.
All proceeds from the event will go to the Genealogical Society.
