The Driftwood Players will debut their latest production this weekend.
“The Last Five Years,” billed as a musical for teens and adults, will open Friday evening and run weekends through May 13 at the Driftwood Playhouse, 120 E. Third St. in Aberdeen.
And for the first time, two “pay what you can” shows will be included.
“We are trying something new to increase our attendance,” said Debbie Scoones, publicity and PR trustee for the Driftwood Players. “On Thursday, May 3 and May 10 … people can attend and pay at the door and pay what they can.
“We hope that this will bring in some folks who may not attend our shows due to financial constraints,” she added.”It’s a test pilot right now, and I’m hoping that we will continue to do this for next season and then evaluate after the season is over.”
No advance tickets will be sold for those two performances, she said. Cash or checks (no plastic) will be accepted at the door.
The play, written by Jason Robert Brown, is directed by Sara Henry and Alex Eddy. It chronicles the five-year life of a marriage, from meeting to breakup and from breakup to meeting again. Jamie is an up-and-coming novelist, and Cathy is a starving actress. The tides of misfortune and success both drive them together and rip them apart.
The two-person play has been double-cast, so on different nights the couple might be played by Jerrod Phelps and Tamara Helland, or by Chris Fruto and Kendall Cavin.
Regular performances will begin Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with two Sunday matinees at 1:30 p.m. May 6 and 13. Tickets are $15 and are available in advance at aberdeendriftwood.com, City Center Drug in Aberdeen, Harbor Drug in Hoquiam, Valu Drug in Montesano, and Dolores’ and Fay’s in Ocean Shores. “Rush” tickets will be available the night of each performance for $10 for students presenting a student ID card.
