Aberdeen’s Driftwood Players are kicking off their 60th season this weekend with “Cabaret,” a musical in two acts for teens and adults.
“Cabaret,” set in a Berlin nightclub in the early 1930s, debuted on Broadway in 1966. The book is by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The Driftwood production is co-directed by Alex Eddy and Sara Henry.
A garish master of ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, the play explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich.
Musical numbers include “Willkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Don’t Tell Mama” and “Two Ladies.”
The curtain will rise at 7:30 p.m. each Friday and Saturday from this weekend through Oct. 13, and the run will end with a 1:30 p.m. Sunday matinee Oct. 14.
Tickets for Saturday and all subsequent performances are $15 each. But this Friday, it’s “pay what you can.” The Driftwood Players are making this offer for opening night of each production this season, with the hope that it will draw people who don’t usually attend the theater.
Tickets are available in advance at aberdeendriftwood.com, City Center Drug in Aberdeen, Harbor Drug in Hoquiam, Valu Drug in Montesano, and Delores’ and Fay’s in Ocean Shores.
The theater is located at 120 E. Third St. in Aberdeen. For more information, visit www.aberdeendriftwood.com.
