The 57th annual Grayland Driftwood Show and Glass Float Hunt last weekend recorded increases of about 25 percent in both attendance and profits from last year.

“In spite of the harsh weather to start out with on Saturday morning, diligent beachcombers did not shy away,” said Carolyn Barker, who organized this year’s event with Tanya Lana.

Rain combined with a high-wind advisory failed to deter those looking to discover genuine Japanese glass floats on the beach this year. Of the 400-plus specimens released earlier in the week by Westport Maritime Museum volunteers, only about 150 had been found and reported as of Sunday. The rest are still expected to arrive along the coast.

About 360 attendees purchased “hunting licenses” for tokens hidden on the beach, which could be traded in for one of dozens of colorful floats made for the event by Opal Art Glass of Cosmopolis.

“Dave and Darlene Camp have been on board for the Grayland event for a few years now,” said Barker. “They start the production in December.”

Opal Art Glass also creates the event’s awards each year.

Laurie Deranleau, of Westport, won the overall People’s Choice award for an art piece she entered in the adult driftwood/enhanced category.

Two Best in Show winners were announced. Among the adults, Diane Gaydeski of Forks won for her glass float display. In the youth division, 7-year-old Koa Johnson of Grayland won for his enhanced driftwood art piece.
