Four co-valedictorians lead Hoquiam’s Class of 2019

Hoquiam High School has 18 honor students in its graduating class of 2019, four of them with perfect 4.0 grade point averages.

Graduation will be held June 7 at Olympic Stadium.

CO-VALEDICTORIANS

Brooke Bogdanovich

The daughter of Greg Bogdanovich and Melinda Jump, Brooke is co-valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. She plans to attend either the University of Puget Sound or Grays Harbor College. Brooke was involved in cheerleading, soccer and Grizzly fusion, and was selected Most Inspirational in golf and basketball. She was the yearbook editor and National Honor Society treasurer, and was selected as the Lions Club Student of the Month for September. Brooke is the recipient of three Grizzly Awards.

Alex Houbregs

Alex is co-valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. The son of Bob and Toni Houbregs, Alex plans to attend either Gonzaga University or the University of Washington to study engineering. He has been involved in Food Ball serving as chair both his junior and senior years. Alex has been an ASB member or class officer for three years and has been a member of the high school band all four years. He is a 4-year varsity letterman in wrestling and cross country, and has been recognized multiple times with the WIAA Outstanding Scholastic Award. Alex is a 2-year letterman for varsity track and 1-year for varsity baseball, and a member of National Honor Society all four years. He was the Lions Club November Student of the Month, and attended Grays Harbor College as a Running Start student.

Maya Jump

Maya is co-valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA and is the daughter of Bonnie and Steve Jump. She will attend Washington State University this fall and plans to become an optometrist. Maya has been involved in varsity soccer, basketball and fast-pitch for four years, earning varsity letters in each sport each year and voted Most Inspirational in all three sports. She served as team captain and was the soccer team MVP. She has been involved in ASB and has been a member of Hope Squad. Maya was the Red Cross Blood Drive Coordinator and a member of National Honor Society. The Lions Club Student of the Month for October, Maya has also received two Grizzly Awards. She was a prom princess and a homecoming princess.

Emma Nitahara

The co-valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA plans to attend either the University of Portland or the University of Washington on her way to a career as a pharmacist. The daughter of Stacey Johnson and Jim Nitahara, Emma has been on the Knowledge Bowl Team for four years. She has been a member of the Future Business Leaders of America for three years, and has been a member of the National Honor Society and the high school color guard.

HONOR GRADUATES

Cain McCullough

Ranked fifth in his class with a 3.988, Cain is the son of Tiffany and Chris McCullough. He plans to attend either the University of Washington or the University of California with an interest in studying either accounting or computer science. He has been a member of the high school band.

Karla Fruto

Karla is ranked sixth with a 3.945 GPA and is the daughter of Miguel Fruto Guzman and Maria Del Pilar Fruto Dominguez. She has been accepted to the Hospitality Management program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas where she plans to pursue a career in guest relations in the hospitality industry while hopefully exploring many different countries. Karla has been a member of the high school band for four years and the jazz band for three, and has served on the Band Leadership Council. For the past two years she has attended Grays Harbor College through the Running Start program.

Sandra Parks

Ranked seventh in her class with a 3.89 GPA, Sandra is the daughter of Darrin Parks and Shonna Carres. She plans to attend Western Washington University where she will pursue a career in medicine or environmental conservation. Sandra has been a student at Grays Harbor College through the Running Start Program, a member of the high school band for four years, and a member of the National Honor Society for three years. She has been a volunteer with the Hoquiam Elks Club for three years. Sandra has lettered in golf for four years and volleyball for two and has been a member of Future Business Leaders of America for two years.

Elyse Goulet

The daughter of Brenda and Randy Goulet is ranked eighth in her class with a 3.859 GPA. Elyse will attend Grays Harbor College and then transfer to the University of Washington or Grand Canyon University to major in student business management and marketing. She has been a member of the varsity volleyball, cheerleading, wrestling and track teams, and a member of National Honor Society and Leadership. Elyse has served as ASB President and Food Ball Chair. She was a member of FBLA, was voted Most Inspirational in volleyball and was homecoming queen.

Reylynn Dunn

Reylynn is ranked ninth with a 3.855 GPA. She is the daughter of Kris and Jamie Dunn, and will attend Eastern Washington University to study to become a nurse practitioner specializing in pediatric oncology. She has been a member of the volleyball, basketball and softball teams, and has been a member of National Honor Society, Renaissance and FCCLA. Reylynn has received three Grizzly Awards, was First Team All League in volleyball and fast-pitch, and has been recognized as All League and MVP in volleyball. She was also recognized as a Lions Club Student of the Month.

Megan Folkers

Ranked 10th with a 3.83 GPA, Megan is the daughter of Amy and Mike Folkers. She will attend Western Washington University and major in biochemistry. She has been a student at Grays Harbor College through the Running Start program and will graduate with her associate of arts degree. Megan has been a member of high school band for four years and jazz band for two, has been involved in Leadership and FBLA, and a member of the golf team for four years.

Aleaya Flores

Aleaya is ranked 11th in her class with a 3.786 GPA. The daughter of Richard and Diane Burchinal, she will attend Grays Harbor College to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in education. Aleaya plans to become a choir teacher and would love to teach at her alma mater. She has been involved in choir, honor society, track and field, drama club and cheerleading; in choir, she has been a section leader and a choir officer. Aleaya has been recognized as Most Improved Alto and Most Outstanding Alto and has had a lead in the high school musical for two years. She has participated in Music in May and was recognized as a Lions Club Student of the Month.

Nicholas Moir

The son of Hoki and Annette Moir is ranked 12th in his class with a 3.74 GPA. He will attend Western Washington University this fall, with plans to earn a Ph.D. in both marine biology and herpetology and become a college professor. Nicholas has been involved in Knowledge Bowl, Food Ball, cross country, track and the Tabletop Gaming Club. He has received the Coach’s Award in Cross Country three times and has been recognized as Scholar Athlete in cross country and track. Nicholas was the Lions Club Student of the Month for October, and he was recognized as a Hometown Hero.

Cristal Venegas

Cristal is ranked 13th with a 3.721 GPA. She is the daughter of Autumn Venegas and will attend the University of Washington in Tacoma to study toward a career as a wildlife technician. Cristal is a member of the marching band and the Grays Harbor College Jazz Band. She is a Running Start student at Grays Harbor College.

Jade Sandstrom

Ranked 14th with a 3.693, the daughter of Jim and Traci Sandstrom plans to attend Arizona State University for a Bachelor of Arts in early childhood education. Jade wants to become a kindergarten teacher and plans to earn a master’s degree. She has been a member of cross country, track, volleyball, cheerleading and drama club. Jade has been a Loggers Playday princess, wrestling manager and Fusion Leader as well as a member of the HOPE Squad. She is also secretary of the National Honor Society and has been recognized as a WIAA Outstanding Academic Athlete all four years.

Kacey Pelan

Kacey is ranked 15th with a 3.68 GPA. She is the daughter of Tracy and Katri Pelan and will attend Boise State University this fall where she plans to earn her Bachelor of Science in nursing. Kacey has been a member of track and field, volleyball, cheerleading and basketball. She has been a Grizzly Fusion mentor and a member of the HOPE Squad. She served as vice president of the National Honor Society, has been recognized as the Lions Club Student of the Month for December and is a two time Grizzly Award recipient.

Trinity Nimmo

The daughter of Lana Malone is ranked 16th in her class with a 3.686 GPA. She will enter the Navy after graduation. Trinity has been involved in Knowledge Bowl, FBLA, Color Guard and the National Honor Society and is a Running Start student at Grays Harbor College.

Brady Cummings

Brady is ranked 17th with a 3.625 GPA. He is the son of Mike and Kim Cummings, and plans to become a game warden. He has been involved in football, wrestling, National Honor Society and Skills USA, and has been twice recognized as the CTE Student of the Month. Brady has received two Grizzly Awards, has been on the Honor Roll four times, is a 2-time All League linebacker and was a Lions Club Student of the Month.

Patiance Wood

Ranked 18th with a 3.643 GPA, Patiance is the daughter of Adrian Ward, Skyh Bittner and Crystal Blair. She will attend Oral Roberts University and plans to become an international nurse so she can help people where it’s needed most. Patiance has been a manager for boys basketball and has been involved in Leadership and Grizzly Fusion. She has been a member of the National Honor Society and the ASL Club. She received a Grizzly Award in 2017 and 2019.
