Metalheads can “thrash in” the holiday season on Friday the 13th at the Raymond Theatre.
Max Davis, organizer of Headbang on the Harbor, has three bands lined up for the event. The headliner is his own group, Hangman’s Park, which he describes as “a heavy, death metal-influenced band out of South Bend.” Davis is that group’s founder, guitarist and vocalist.
“Headbang on the Harbor started as my idea to bring an original metal music concert where my band could play with personal friends and like-minded bands at the Raymond Theatre,” he said. “Both of the first two were heavily sponsorship-driven.”
The first show was held June 8, 2018. It was a free show, with local businesses sponsoring it. The second show, staged Nov. 17, 2018, was a fundraiser for the Raymond Food Bank.
“We made $577 for the food bank and got a ton of food donated for both places,” said Davis. The local HAVA animal shelter also benefited from that event, “thanks especially to the out-of-town bands who brought a lot of dog and cat food and treats.”
To date, nine bands have played Headbang at the Harbor, some coming from as far as Seattle. Their musical styles have ranged from deathcore to hard rock, said Davis.
Performing this Friday is Reverent Circle, a “groove-based” hard rock band out of McCleary that has played at Davis’ previous events. “They are fan favorites,” he said.
The third name on the bill is a Headbang newcomer: the Upper Eschaton, a progressive three-piece rock band out of South Bend.
Why the historic Raymond Theatre?
“It is the best all-ages venue in North Pacific County, in my opinion,” said Davis. “I have seen some awesome music shows and movies there. I really wanted to have Headbang at the Harbor at the theater, and they have been fun to work with.”
The day after Headbang on the Harbor, the theater will be showing the Jimmy Stewart 1946 Christmas classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
“We love supporting our community with our venue,” said Raymond Theatre director Diane Ziel.
Davis already is planning the next Headbang on the Harbor for summer.
“It will be fully sponsored and will be a fundraiser for a food bank in a neighboring town,” he said.
Friday’s show starts at 6 p.m. at the Raymond Theatre, 323 Third St.
Tickets are $5 and are available in advance at Wild Man Brewing, 203 Duryea St. in Raymond — just down the block from the theater. You can take your ticket to the brewery the day of the show and get $1 off a pint or $2 off an entree.
