If you have some musical talent you’re itching to share, Gene Sparks has just the gig for you.
Several years after the final Sunday Jam at the Pourhouse in downtown Aberdeen, he’s looking to reignite that concept with a weekly event at the Hoquiam VFW.
Starting this Sunday, musicians can sign up for a 20-minute time slot to take the stage. Groups and solo players are welcome, as are vocalists looking to perform with a live band.
“We’re going to allow (each act) a bare minimum of one song, up to 20 minutes,” says Sparks. “As we progress, we’ll finish up the evening trying to combine people to go up and do something together — at least, that’s what the plan is.”
Sparks, a VFW member himself, says he suggested the “synergistic relationship” to the folks at Post 1135 and got a very positive response. He says they’ve committed to hosting the weekly event at least through the summer to see how it goes.
“They said doing something is better than doing nothing, and the least we can do is try,” he says.
Amplifiers and other sound equipment will be provided. All musicians are asked to bring is their instruments — though a drum kit will be available for public use. (If that’s your instrument of choice, just bring your own sticks.)
Musicians can start signing up at 6:15 p.m. Sunday and the evening will begin at 7 at the VFW hall, 407 Seventh St. in downtown Hoquiam. All non-VFW members must sign in at the door as guests.
