For those not looking for high-adrenaline thrills at the jet ski competition this weekend, a more low-key South Beach option might be the Hot August Night planned Friday at the Grayland Community Hall.
The event, billed as a “music and comedy party,” is one of several fundraisers being organized by the nonprofit Cranberry Heritage to facilitate upgrades needed at the historic hall.
“All of this fundraising is to pay for the electrical system that is going to be replaced at the hall. So we are getting our pot filled,” said Carolyn Barker, director of the community hall and a Cranberry Heritage board member.
Ralph Brock organized music for the event. In addition to his Tokeland duo, Country Mile, the evening’s acts are scheduled to include CD Scofield, an acoustic guitarist based in Montesano; Lisa Ramsauer, a singer-songwriter from Olympia; and Mischief &Mack, who play contemporary acoustics.
A raffle will be conducted, with prizes donated or sponsored by the Glenacres Historic Inn, Cranberry Winery, Grayland Players, Grayland Espresso and Rogers Engineering.
Barker also will emcee a few rounds of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” with audience participation.
Food will include chili, tacos, brownies and popcorn. A no-host bar will offer beer and wine.
Another Cranberry Heritage fundraising effort, the Buy a Tile program, launched last month. In return for specific donations, Tanya Lana of the South Beach Arts Association Clay Studio is creating custom tiles with the donors’ names to be mounted at the hall.
The nonprofit is looking to raise $12,000 initially to cover the 1930 structure’s electrical upgrade. After that, the board hopes to keep adding to the coffers in anticipation of the hall’s future needs.
“We’re not wanting this to stop,” said Lana, who’s also a Cranberry Heritage board member. “We want it to be ongoing for the community.”
Hot August Night will run from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the hall, 2701 Cranberry Road in Grayland. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for kids up to age 12.
