At a recent ceremony at the Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc., plant in Markham, Mrs. Aino Joutsen retired after 16 years of working in the plant, with memories that go back to the very beginning of the cranberry industry in the area.
Mrs. Joutsen’s late husband, Herman, was one of the original five Finns who first put in cranberry bogs in Grayland, coming to the area in 1914. He used to recall that he made his first bog while “commuting” from Aberdeen to Grayland by bicycle. The other four pioneers in the commercial cranberry growing were Arthur Reunanen, Henry Hanns, John Heikkila and John Lundgren.
