On April 25, Lake Quinault hosted an Associated Student Body Interhigh event. Students from Naselle, Taholah, Wishkah, North River, Oakville and Mary M. Knight schools also participated.
“The goal is to have an annual Interhigh and rotate among all seven schools,” said Barb Marshall, a Lake Quinault High School teacher of arts and career and technical education.
“Interhigh is a way for students to get to know each other outside of the competitive nature athletics offers,” she said. “This is simply a way to unite students from other schools and celebrate our similarities and differences.”
The event included four breakout sessions. One highlighted Hispanic culture within the community, as two Lake Quinault moms taught the kids how to make a Mexican dish called sopes: thick tortillas topped with meat and vegetables.
Another session consisted of making dreamcatchers with Lake Quinault School Board member Anita Blackburn. Everyone learned how to make a dreamcatcher and some information about the Native American culture behind them.
Wood shop teacher Vic Garrone led a session in which students built flower boxes. In addition to taking home the boxes they’d made, the students received flowers to plant in them.
In the fourth breakout, Lake Quinault Middle School science teacher Michael Kenney showed and discussed a remotely operated vehicle he’d built with some of his students.
“The students had a great time participating, and they all enjoyed the day,” said Marshall.
