The annual Montesano Bill Brookshire Memorial Bicycle Rodeo was greeted with glorious weather and around 100 kids who, thanks to donations from several local businesses, had the chance to win a bike and got other goodies at the event held Saturday, June 23, at the high school.
With cash donations, eight bicycles were purchased, along with other items like goodie bags, bike lights and safety information. With additional donations from various businesses, 90-plus bike helmets were given to the kids.
The Montesano Kiwanis provided hot dogs, water and juice for the event. LeMay Grays Harbor donated water bottles, and Sierra Pacific donated backpacks. El Rancho Mexican restaurant donated two small bicycles, and a local family donated two bikes plus helmets.
The Crows Nest restaurant donated six kids’ meal coupons, and Barber T provided two haircut certificates. Cascade Natural Gas donated cash and a couple of bicycle locks and bicycle safety kits, and Bulldog Lanes donated fries and soda. The Montesano Volunteer Fire Department provided a bicycle safety check/repair station.
Montesano’s police and fire departments host the event every year. It’s a chance to spend a fun day getting to know local officers and firefighters, and provides safety information for young bicycle riders.
