Some 50 people sympathetic with the Mary’s River Lumber Co. crew’s effort to gain a new labor agreement, picketed the company this morning to bring attention to the negotiations.

The mill is not on strike, but about a month ago the International Woodworkers of America crew voted to authorize a strike should negotiations fail.

While the crew of about 85 worked inside this morning, former St. Mary’s workers and members of other unions picketed for an hour at the mill, located just outside Montesano.

“This crew made a big, bold step (in authorizing the strike) and it’s important for them to know they have support behind them,” said Dave Rux, financial secretary for the IWA.

Rux would not discuss details of the contract, but claims that, on the whole, it is worse than the current terms.

“Their proposal is so horrible, it is degrading to any working man, I don’t care if he’s union or not,” Rux said.
