Miguel “Mikey” Bishop of Orting traveled to Huntsville, Alabama, last month for Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students.

The Aberdeen Rotary Club and the Aberdeen-based Rosencrantz Fund paid for the trip. The Rosencrantz endowment was formed to aid deaf and blind children in Western Washington.

Mikey, who is totally blind, was one of 182 youth there from 12 countries and 25 states. He participated in the camp’s Aviation Challenge program. He was part of the squad called Reaper and was given the call sign Captain Obvious.

He got the opportunity to learn about water rescue, night patrolling and group rafting. He also did a simulated F-16C Eagle flight, learned survival skills and aviation history, focused on teamwork and made new friends.

At the graduation ceremony, Mikey was honored with the Max Carpenter and Kathy Johnson Award, given to just one camper “who personifies the spirit of Space Camp and Aviation Challenge and at the same time overcomes their personal obstacles to perform their duties and team assignments while maintaining the respect of their teammates and counselors.”
