Twin Harbors communities set to participate in National Night Out

Law enforcement officers and firefighters from across the region will participate in National Night Out on Tuesday.

Law enforcement officers and firefighters from across the region will participate in National Night Out on Tuesday, an event where emergency service providers spend a few hours connecting with the residents of the communities they serve.

The program began in 1984 and now involves communities in all 50 states. Residents register ahead of time to host events and presentations from law enforcement and emergency service providers, ranging from barbecues to visits from McGruff the Crime Dog.

These Twin Harbors communities will join more than 16,000 others across the nation Tuesday evening:

Brady

The Brady Volunteer Fire Association will host its event at 6 p.m. at the Brady Fire Station, 8 Fire Station Road in Montesano.

“This event hits close to home this year after our station was hit by burglars in May, something some people never recover from after their trust and privacy are violated,” read a statement from the department. “The National Night Out event is designed to get to know your neighbors, build trust, and our association is close to our community and neighborhood and want to reach out and say thank you for being our neighbor and supporting us.”

This event is co-hosted by two neighborhood block watch groups, Brady Bottoms and Winkleman Road. There will be food, drinks and a variety of activities for the entire family.

Elma

Fire District 5 and the Elma fire and police departments will host an event from 6 to 8 p.m. at 10th Street Park with free burgers, hot dogs and ice cream, face painting and activities for all ages. Safety and security exhibits and demonstrations will be included.

Hoquiam

“Hoquiam has been a proud participant in this great event for many years,” said Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers. “Last year we celebrated with 12 block parties.”

Public officials, police officers, firefighters and Crime Watch volunteers will drop in at each block party, and McGruff the Crime Dog will talk about crime prevention and general safety tips.

“Since we usually have so many block parties in Hoquiam, we have to split up into two groups just to make sure we can visit every party location during the evening,” said Myers.

Communities hosting block parties between 6 and 8 p.m. in Hoquiam include:

• 1600 block of Broadway

(Riverside Place)

• 400 block of Third

• 700 block of Karr

• 1400 block of Marion

• 900 K St. (Channel Point Village)

• 600 K St. (Hoquiam Elks)

• 900 First St.

• 800 Maple St.

Montesano

Night Out returns to Fleet Park this year from 6 to 8 p.m. The Kiwanis Club will supply hot dogs and juice, and the Dairy Council and City Councilman Dan Wood will provide ice cream bars and chocolate milk.

The Fire Department and Police Department will be there, as well as representatives from Grays Harbor Crisis Support, the Suicide Prevention Hotline, Connections and Beyond Survival. Certified inspectors also will be on hand to make sure your child’s car seat meets safety standards.

Raymond

Local law enforcement and first responders will host a gathering from 5 to 8 p.m. at South Fork Landing Park, located at Alder Street and Highway 101 in Raymond, next to the Northwest Carriage Museum.

Agencies and organizations planning to participate in this year’s event include the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office, the Pacific County Communications Center, the Pacific County Emergency Management Agency, the Raymond Police Department, the South Bend Police Department, the Raymond Fire Department, the South Bend Fire Department, the Crisis Support Network, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Teen Advocacy Coalition, Community Watch/Neighborhood Watch, Community Emergency Response Team, and Pacific County Guns and Hoses.

Westport

The event will center around Westport City Park, two blocks west of Montesano Street on Washington Street. There will be hot dogs, activities for kids, raffles, a water balloon toss, a bounce house and the annual tug-of-war challenge between the local police and fire departments.
