All logging operations in Gray Harbor county were down today as state foresters of Washington and Oregon ordered a two-day closure in the western halves of the two states as a forest fire precaution.

Humidity sank to a 28 “danger point,” yesterday and the temperature at the Montesano fire district office was 92 degrees.

A suit petitioning the court for an injunction to restrain the Montesano School Board from enforcing its rule that the hemline of high school girls’ dresses shall rise no higher than five inches above their knees while kneeling has been filed in Grays Harbor Superior Court and will be heard before Judge John Kirkwood.

The suit was filed by B. Rolf Espedal in behalf of Marchel Schoch and Charles Craig, parents of two girls attending Montesano High School.

The petition contends that a number of children, including the two daughters of the complainants, have been sent home from school for violation of the order and have been advised they will be permanently suspended for one semester in the event of a second violation.

The petitioners contend the administration of Montesano High School has arbitrarily sent home only a portion of those who do not meet the regulation and that some students have been allowed to remain in school and others have been sent home without any reasonable reason for the discrimination between the students.

Grays Harbor may be low on salmon this year, but Hoquiam will be up to the gills in it today.

The famous Lions Salmon Barbecue will be part of Loggers Playday for the 30th year. Mouth-watering grilled salmon meals will be served from 2 to 7 p.m. at Washington Elementary School.

But don’t ask any Lions where they scared up all that fish.

“It’s always the freshest of fresh fish,” organizer George Powers promises. “We have our own source and we don’t divulge the source.”

Don’t ask for any recipes either. After three decades of fool-proof, crowd-pleasing preparation, the Lions aren’t ready to pass along any tips.

“These guys that cook the fish, they’ve got their secret sauce,” Powers said.
