The volunteers assembled 131 meals Friday morning

Volunteers at the Salvation Army in Aberdeen assembled 131 Thanksgiving meals for families in need Friday morning. The Salvation Army partnered with the Lions Club and ASAP Business Solutions in Aberdeen, which donated $2,500, to supply the food along with volunteers from all the groups.

On Friday, the 10 volunteers put together the boxes of non-perishable foods, such as pie stuffing, fruits and vegetables, but will be adding chicken donated by Coastal Harvest, bread and eggs on Monday before handing out the meals to the families, who had to preregister for food.

Aberdeen Lions member Candy Palmer, who recently retired from Timberland Bank, said she wanted to get more involved with Salvation Army and said the Lions partner in a number of donation endeavors.

“We’re really behind the scenes on a lot of things people don’t know we’re involved in,” said Palmer. “I’ve been working (at Salvation Army) for a while, and just decided to take a larger role. It’s an awesome program.”
