22 names added to Montesano veterans honor wall

The Marion J. “Bogey” Bogdanovich Veterans Honor Wall in Montesano’s Fleet Park has grown by 22 names.

It’s the largest number of names added at one time since the monument — named for the decorated Korean War veteran and the longtime Montesano educator — was placed in 2012, said honor wall committee chairwoman Bev Hall.

Josh Warness, with Grays Harbor Monument, was in Fleet Park on Thursday, removing the rubber stencil created to etch the names into the wall. It’s a meticulous process, and the 22 new additions made for a larger job than most he does outside, but by early afternoon the names shone brightly as he put the finishing touches on the wall.

The new additions — added to the third wall — include veterans who served in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. There are four “Mustard men” on the list: Stanley P. and Donald H., who served in WWI and WWII, respectively; Vietnam Marine Corps veteran Ed; and James E.

James E. Mustard was serving in the Army during WWII and was killed in action in the Philippines June 17, 1945. He was laid to rest four years later in the Satsop cemetery. It’s the first such killed in action – KIA – designation on the wall, said Hall.

Another among the new names, Charles Marion Stephens, also served in the Philippines during WWII, and was a recipient of the Philippine Liberation Medal, which recognizes military service during the last 11 months of WWII when the Japanese military was driven out of the Philippines before their surrender in September 1945.

Names for the wall are submitted to the honor wall committee by family members and surviving veterans who live or have lived within the boundaries of the Montesano School District. Those who want to place names on the memorial send in the veteran’s proof of honorable discharge and $60 for the engraving.

When dedicated in September 2012, it consisted of one 3-by-3-foot granite slab. In October 2019, a fourth slab was added. Hall said the honor wall now has close to 400 names.

Again, a name can be placed on the wall of any veteran, living or dead, who has lived within the Montesano School District and was honorably discharged from any branch of service. For more information, contact Hall at 360-249-5563.
