The Aberdeen City Council will host a workshop on homelessness today at 6 p.m.
Proposed by City Council President Tawni Andrews, she said it will be a chance to educate new and current City Council members on the homelessness issue in Aberdeen, and to see what they can do to improve it.
The workshop is open to the public and will be held in the third floor conference room of Aberdeen City Hall.
“I hope we can get some education to all council members, as far as all the problems happening in our city right now, and understanding what can we proactively do to address them.” said Andrews. “Obviously this isn’t something we can solve because it’s a nationwide epidemic. But can we do anything or provide tools for staff, and what can we do?”
At last week’s strategic planning workshop at City Hall, Andrews said homelessness was the No. 1 priority listed by the City Council.
Andrews invited representatives from most of the local homeless-assistance programs to participate in the workshop, and she said hopefully they will attend to better explain to council members how they are currently combating homelessness.
“I’m hoping they do attend, so if that any council members have questions they’ll be there to answer them,” she said. “This will be more of a fact-finding mission and sharing of ideas.”
