Aberdeen High School heightens security after threat

Someone allegedly threatened to bring a gun to school in an online forum

The Aberdeen School District enacted enhanced security measures Wednesday after a possible threat was reported to the administration.

A news release from the school district stated they were enacting enhanced security measures, while an Aberdeen Police Department presence could be seen by the high school.

“We wanted to bring this information to the attention of our students and families without causing undue alarm so that individuals can make their own decisions,” said Co-superintendent Lynn Green in a news release. “The Aberdeen Police Department is continuing to investigate.”

The threat allegedly came from a social media message thread of local students where an unknown person mentioned bringing a gun to school on Tuesday evening, which was reported to a school administrator, according to the news release.

Students have been arrested in the past for making threats centered around school, such as when a 17-year-old boy was arrested in Hoquiam earlier this year for threatening to shoot a staff member at Aberdeen High School.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, no developments in the investigation had been announced by the police.
