An officer of the Aberdeen Police Department was sent to the hospital Monday for shoulder discomfort after his marked patrol vehicle was involved in an accident at the intersection of South Park and 4th streets, according to a statement from Lt. C.J. Chastain.
Just before noon the officer was driving southbound in the left lane of Park Street, traveling about 25-30 mph, police said, as he approached 4th Street. According to the report, a 2001 Honda Civic driven eastbound on 4th Street by a 36-year-old Aberdeen man stopped briefly at the stop sign, then pulled out into the path of the patrol vehicle.
“The driver reported he looked southbound but failed to check for vehicles from the north before pulling out,” said Chastain. “The officer took immediate evasive action by braking hard but was unable to avoid the collision.
The officer was taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital for shoulder discomfort and was treated and released, said Chastain, who said the Honda driver was checked at the scene by Aberdeen aid personnel and declined further assistance. Both vehicles sustained about $2,500 in damage.
