A stabbing in Aberdeen on Sunday evening turned into a case involved multiple agencies from two counties after the suspect fled the scene.
The stabbing was called in at 8:46 p.m. near State and F Street, said Cmdr. Steve Timmons of the Aberdeen Police Department.
“It was reported that a guy was stabbed in the stomach. The suspect had left on foot,” Timmons said in an interview. “Our guys went down there, secured the scene, talked to witnesses. Patrol was looking for the suspect who left on foot.”
The victim, at 29-year-old Aberdeen resident, was transported by the Aberdeen Fire Department to Harbor Regional Health for a stab wound to the abdomen. The victim was significantly injured but stable at last report, Timmons said. While speaking with witnesses, APD officers were able to identify a suspect, a 27-year-old Raymond resident, whose name has not yet been released, Timmons said. The weapon used was a fixed-blade knife, Timmons said.
“We got information on who the suspect was,” Timmons said. “The information was passed on to agencies down there.”
The stabbing came after an argument, said Aberdeen’s Lt. David Cox. Personnel from the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office, Cosmopolis, and Hoquiam police departments assisted in securing the scene and searching for the suspect with canine and drone assets, Timmons said. Police cleared the scene before the rain started to fall, Cox said.
“These two were known to each other,” Cox said. “They started off with a verbal altercation that escalated.”
South Bend and Raymond police located the suspect at a residence in South Bend, Timmons said, talking him out of a structure and taking him into custody without incident. Police guarded the scene as detectives sought a warrant to search the residence, while other law enforcement personnel handed the suspect over to APD custody at the county line, Timmons said. Timmons thanked departments in both counties for their assistance.
“It ties up a lot of resources, a case like this,” Timmons said. “Having those agencies willing to help us out, it’s very appreciated.”
The suspect is currently in city jail on a first-degree assault charge, Timmons said, as they work through the court process. There is no ongoing threat to the public, Timmons said. Detectives are still investigating the case, Timmons said.
“It’s not common,” Timmons said. “We don’t get many stabbings.”
