The Grays Harbor Council of Governments invites the public to attend an open house today during which the revitalization of the cities of Aberdeen, Hoquiam and Cosmopolis will be the topic of discussion.
“The project consultant (Stantec) will discuss the community-wide Brownfield Assessment Grant,” said council executive director Vicki Cummings. “If the grant is awarded we will begin a 3-year process to identify specific sites for redevelopment.”
“Brownfield” is a term for a former commercial or industrial site where future use is affected by real or perceived environmental contamination; old gas stations, factories, mills and deserted office buildings are examples. The grant is from an EPA program that provides funds to rehabilitate these types of properties.
“In order to apply for the grant the council has formed a coalition with the cities of Aberdeen, Hoquiam and Cosmopolis,” said Cummings. “The purpose of the open house is to share information on the need and the process for the grant. We will be asking attendees to share their ideas and, if the grant is awarded, to participate on a stakeholders committee.”
Topics include the impact brownfield sites have on the livelihood, health and safety of the community; plans to transform blighted areas into safe, viable spaces that enhance neighborhoods and provide new employment opportunities; redevelopment strategies and desired project outcomes; and opportunities for community involvement throughout the project.
All Grays Harbor County residents, business owners, property owners and community organization members are welcome to the open house, which is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. today in the Port of Grays Harbor commission meeting room, 111 S. Wooding Street in Aberdeen.
