BB gun shootings cause property damage

The local mischief creators in town ought to look out for the police — because they’re coming.

Hoquiam Police Department officers are investigating incidents that have resulted in property damage to vehicles, according to a Hoquiam Police Department Facebook post.

At least one victim reported being shot at, though he wasn’t hit, according to the post, which was signed by Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers.

Just before 7 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, Hoquiam officers received a report of a shooting at a business off of Airport Way, which is near Bowerman Airport in the westside of Hoquiam.

“The victim was standing near his vehicle when a small (white) car drove by and shot out a window of the victim’s vehicle,” the post states. “There was also a man walking his dog in (the) area who was also shot at from the same vehicle, but was not struck.”

Hoquiam police officers recovered BB pellets at the scene and the thought, according to the post, is the weapon used was some sort of “high-powered BB gun.”

“Both victims provided a description of the vehicle, but officers were unable to locate it at that time,” Myers states.

Hoquiam police officers have been sent to several locations around town. They’ve also found vehicles with shot-out windows that have not yet been reported.

“Although, the incidents are believed to be related,” the post states. “Officers are taking police reports on each malicious mischief incident and are reviewing home surveillance video from local residents.”

Myers said in an email to The Daily World on Wednesday morning, March 16, that so far Hoquiam had taken 11 related reports of vehicle damage. The damage was reported on the east side of town.

“An officer is out with another one,” he said. “Most of the damage last night was on the east end of Hoquiam, including Aberdeen Avenue, Pacific Avenue and Cherry Street.”

Myers said officers also received information Tuesday night that involved a full-size pickup and a small car, “possibly dark in color.”

In a quick search on the Safelite Auto Glass website, a window for a Subaru Forrester, can cost about $340 to replace. The website notes the cost would be “as little as $100 with insurance.”

Anyone who has suffered this sort of damage should call 911 Dispatch to make a police report. The nonemergency phone number is 360-533-8765. The day shift sergeant on-duty is Sgt. Jeff Salstrom, the post states. Anyone with questions or information on these crimes should email jsalstrom@cityofhoquiam.com. Additionally, they can call him directly at 360-532-0892 ext. 286.
