A large brush fire in the Grand Mound area Tuesday afternoon reportedly burned a commercial business, a barn and caused the evacuation of homes in the area, according to various news outlets.
As of press time early Tuesday evening, the fire was still not under control, according to Live 95 Radio in Centralia. Citing West Thurston Regional Fire Authority, the station said the fire started on the west side of I-5, but jumped the freeway and was burning in brush on the east side and was moving toward the Scatter Creek Rest Area. The station also said a helicopter dumping fire retardant had to stop the effort because of civilian drones in the area.
In mid-afternoon, the size of the fire was estimated to be between 30 and 40 acres. Some homes have reportedly been damaged and a business on Loganberry Street in Grand Mound was reportedly destroyed.
The West Thurston Regional Fire Authority said the fire was first reported in the area of 183rd Ave SW and Guava St SW, near the Scatter Creek Wildlife Recreation Area. Several firefighting agencies were called to help.
