Grays Harbor Opera Workshop to present Iolanthe
The singers of the Grays Harbor Opera Workshop are bringing one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s finest comic operas to the stage of the Bishop Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15 — a fully staged production of the “fairy opera” Iolanthe (pronounced “eye-oh-LAN-thee”).
The production features a cast of over 30 singers from Grays Harbor College and the Grays Harbor community, and a troupe of dancers from the Turning Pointe Classical School of Dance. It will be sung in the original English.
“Iolanthe is often considered by the Gilbert and Sullivan die-hards to be their finest creation, and after spending the last couple of months with it, it’s easy to see why,” says co-director Ian Dorsch. “The music is just so well crafted, and it’s silly and accessible to modern audiences in a way that reminds me a little of Pirates of Penzance — it’s foundational British comedy. We are so excited to share it with our Harbor community.”
The opera pits the pompous noblemen of the House of Lords against the fairies of the forest in a whimsical and satirical battle of the sexes. Iolanthe, the most beloved of all the fairies, has returned from 25 years in exile after committing an unforgivable crime: marrying a mortal. Now, her half-fairy, half-human son also wishes to marry a mortal — the fair Phyllis, the ward of the Lord Chancellor himself. Unfortunately, Phyllis is also pursued by half the Peers in Parliament, and topsy-turvy hijinks ensue.
Kids are encouraged to wear fairy costumes to the performances, and there will be a fairy dress-up table and photo booth in the Bishop Center lobby prior to the show.
Iolanthe is co-directed by Ian and Joy Dorsch, and accompanied by Kira Miller. Subject matter is appropriate for the whole family. Performances are Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at www.ghc.edu/bishop. All tickets are $15, children 12 and under get in free.
Driftwood Players present ‘Nunset Boulevard’
This is the final weekend of the Driftwood Players two-act musical for the whole family, “Nunset Boulevard,” directed by Brad Duffy.
The little sisters of Hoboken are off to Tinseltown with the thrilling idea of playing the Hollywood Bowl, only to find out it’s the Hollywood Bowl-a-rama. Then they hear a big-time producer is auditioning people for a new movie musical about the movie star who became a nun — this could be their big break. Reprising their roles are Kathe Rowe as Reverend Mother, Debbie Scoones as Sister Mary Hubert, Monica Ewing as Sister Robert Ann and Patty Sundstrom as Sister Mary Paul Amnesia. Also joining the group is Chaela Watkins as Sister Mary Leo. Come see what nonsense the sisters are up to this time.
