When: Through Sunday, March 2. Floats are released every day. The Expo will be held at the Ocean Shores Convention Center. Doors open on Saturday, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $3 per person, $5 per couple, and children under 12 are free.

What: Hundreds of authentic Japanese glass fishing floats with “EXPO25” etched into the glass to be released. Glass fishing floats still occasionally wash ashore on West Coast beaches after many years at sea, but it’s a rare occurrence.

Why: This float release activity is part of the Beachcombers and Glass Float Expo.

How: “Float fairies” and “float wranglers” regularly distribute antique glass fishing floats onto the beach, water and fringe dune areas in the greater Ocean Shores area during the float release period. Crab boats release floats outside the surf if the winds, tides and currents are cooperating.

Contest to Win Large Prize Floats: First, find a float from the float release that’s been etched with “EXPO25.” Only beachcomb one float per person. Once you’ve found a float, you can enter the contest by posting a photo of your float find on the Facebook group Beachcombers and Glass Float Expo with the hashtag #EXPO25. You can increase your chances of winning by entering the contest in-person by bringing your float to the Beachcombers and Glass Float Expo The contest ends at 3 p.m. sharp on Sunday, March 2.

The Driftwood Players These Shining Lives! continues

These Shining Lives! continues its run with The Driftwood Players.

These Shining Lives! — a drama in two acts for teens and adults — is written by Melanie Marnich and directed by Alex Eddy

The play chronicles the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day, exploring their true story and its continued resonance. Catherine and her friends are dying, it’s true, but theirs is a story of survival in its most transcendent sense, as they refuse to allow the company that stole their health to kill their spirits – or endanger the lives of those who come after them.

Performance dates:

Friday, Saturday, Sunday: Feb. 28, March 1, 2

Friday and Saturday curtain time : 7:30 p.m.

Boots for Bears features paper airplanes fundraiser

Boots For Bears Fly-In, a fundraiser by a group of Hoquiam Grizzlies, is March 1 at the Hoquiam High School Gymnasium from noon to 2 p.m.

This is a family event where community members compete to make and aim paper airplanes on various targets to win some amazing prizes donated by community members and local businesses. Paper will be sold at $.25 per sheet or 20 for $5. Paper must be purchased from Boots for Bears at the door. Cash or credit card accepted

Boots for Bears is working with the nonprofit Saron Lutheran-First Presbyterian Church to support students in our community. They are currently running a footwear drive aimed at providing boots, shoes and essential needs to children.

As the colder months approach, many families face difficulties in affording footwear and clothing for their little ones. Their goal is to ensure that every child has access to suitable footwear and clothing that keeps them warm, comfortable and dry.

Monetary donations or donations of new footwear/boots and socks would be immensely appreciated. All donations are tax deductible. If you are able to contribute, please drop off donations at Harbor Drug & Gifts at 316 8th St., Hoquiam. They are also accepting monetary donations, checks payable to Boots For Bears, to help purchase these items directly. Your generosity can make a significant difference in the lives of children in Hoquiam.
