During their Feb. 25 regular meeting, the three-member Grays Harbor County Board of Commissioners consisting of Georgia Miller, Rick Hole and Vickie Raines voted unanimously to adopt a resolution “establishing new rates and charges for certain water and sewer systems, and authorizing reduced utility rates for low-income senior citizens.”
“I wish we could do more for our seniors, if we ever get (an) opportunity in the future we should strongly consider doing more for our seniors,” Hole said.
The resolution states, “The Board authorizes a 25% reduction in rates for water and sewer utility services for customers who are at least 65 years of age as of the date the application for the lower rate is accepted and who have a gross income or anticipated gross income from all sources for all persons residing in the household that does not exceed the statewide monthly need standards for cash assistance.”
The Grays Harbor County Utilities and Development Division recommended the rate reduction. The explanation for the request stated, “Currently, the County does not offer reduced utility rates to low-income senior citizens and the Department believes that providing such a program could be in the best interests of the County.”
“I was really excited to see this come across our desk to give a little bit of help to those that need it,” Miller said. “I think it’s a great thing and happy to support that.”
The resolution will take effect March 1.
