Well, that’s ironic.
Police in Muncie, Indiana, say they were checking on a pair of children after an anonymous caller suggested they might have been left home alone during a school day, according to the Muncie Star Press. When they arrived last Tuesday, police say, they found the kids safe and watching a perfect movie for the occasion.
It was “Home Alone,” which features a young Macaulay Culkin as 8-year-old Kevin McCallister after his family leaves him — you guessed it — home alone, according to RTV6.
Police say Taylor Cumings, their mother, kept her 7-year-old son home from school to watch over his 4-year-old brother, WTHR reported. She headed into work at the Youth Opportunity Center and left the boys by themselves, police say.
Someone then called law enforcement, urging officers to check on the boys, police say. When they arrived, the 7-year-old boy saw the officers through his home’s window and shouted out, “It’s the police,” according to the Muncie Star Press.
The boys wouldn’t open the front door for the officers, police say, but they called their aunt Mandy Cumings. The 7-year-old said he was hesitant to open the door because he worried “it was probably a fake cop,” WTHR reported.
Mandy Cumings rushed to the house and got the boys to let the officers in, police say, according to the Muncie Star Press.
That’s when they noticed “Home Alone” was on the TV.
“That was the movie that was playing,” Mandy Cumings told WTHR. “It was a really big coincidence.”
Taylor Cumings was arrested and faces two charges of neglect of a dependent, RTV6 reported. The mom allegedly told police that she tried to get a baby sitter — but instead had to settle for her 7-year-old son.
In other “Home Alone” news, Macaulay Culkin has recaptured the nation’s attention after starring in a new ad for Google Assistant. The video imagines what Kevin McCallister would look like now, and how he might have used today’s technology to fend off bad guys.
