Sheriff’s deputies used a Taser on Wednesday to subdue a domestic violence suspect armed with a machete in East County.
The Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office received a report of a woman crying and covered in mud and a man carrying a machete at the 700 block of Elma-McCleary Road west of McCleary.
When the first deputy arrived, the man, a 48-year-old from Satsop, did not have the machete showing. The woman who was reported with the man had already left the area.
“The deputy attempted to stop the male to investigate the domestic dispute from a safe distance away,” according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office. “The male ignored the deputy’s commands to stop and reached into his jacket and pulled out a machete.”
The deputy drew his sidearm and ordered the man to drop the machete, but the suspect ignored the commands, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy increased the distance between the suspect and himself. And the suspect eventually dropped the machete, the release states.
While the deputy was trying to talk with the suspect, he also was trying to get the suspect away from the machete.
The suspect began to return to his weapon and again was ordered to stay away from it. An Elma Police Department officer then arrived on scene to assist.
The deputy still had the suspect at gunpoint, and the officer drew his Taser.
The suspect then said he “had something else in his jacket,” the release states, and he again would not reply to law enforcement commands. As the suspect reached into his jacket, the Elma officer shot the suspect with the Taser. Law enforcement was then able to subdue the suspect, take him into custody and call for aid.
The man was arrested for obstructing a law enforcement officer.
Officers later were able to contact the woman involved. She denied being assaulted and said she was not injured, according to authorities.
