The Washington State Patrol will conduct extra DUI patrols with 145 other state agencies starting Friday and concluding on Sept. 4 as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign, according to a press release from the agency.
The State Patrol arrested 12,949 impaired drivers last year.
Impaired drivers were involved in crashes that resulted in 277 deaths and another 286 serious injuries in Washington in 2016, according to the WSP.
Those deaths are more likely in the summer, according to the agency.
“This is the deadliest season of the year on our roads,” a press release from the Washington State Patrol reads. “The extra patrols will be targeting impaired drivers in an effort to reduce the number of serious injury and fatality collisions in our state.”
Impaired driving could be caused by alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs or other substances that cause impairment.
