A three-alarm fire gutted a building at 115 W. Heron St. in downtown Aberdeen early Saturday morning.
Aberdeen Fire Chief Tom Hubbard said the call came in around 2:42 a.m. and arriving crews could see smoke coming from the roof. He almost immediately called for a second alarm, then a third, for assistance from surrounding agencies.
“We made three different interior attacks and made it to the second floor,” said Hubbard. Portions of the second floor had already burned away and the remaining floor was hot, indicating fire was burning in the space between the floor and the first story ceiling.
“They could tell there was fire all around them,” said Hubbard. Firefighters retreated and changed to an exterior attack to contain the fire to the single structure.
Hot spots were still visible at 8 a.m. and Hubbard said the department would be on the scene through the morning to completely extinguish the fire.
The building until recently housed C&C Motor Sports on the ground floor. Revival Grays Harbor had its offices on the second floor, but it was unclear Saturday morning if the organization still occupied that space. Hubbard said early Saturday crews had searched as much as the conditions would allow and the building appeared to have been vacant at the time. No injuries to firefighters were reported.
Neighboring businesses, including Scoops on the west and Affordable Used Appliances on the east, appeared to have been spared damage from the fire itself, but it was unknown early Saturday if they had suffered damage from water and smoke.
Travelers heading east out of Aberdeen should be prepared for delays as several blocks of West Heron and some side streets have been closed as crews mop up the fire.
The fire appears to have started on the second floor, said Hubbard. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
