A three-alarm fire gutted a commercial structure at 115 W. Heron St. in downtown Aberdeen early Saturday morning.
Aberdeen Fire Chief Tom Hubbard said the call came in around 2:42 a.m. and arriving crews could see smoke coming from the roof. He almost immediately called for a second alarm, then a third, for assistance from surrounding agencies.
“We made three different interior attacks and made it to the second floor,” said Hubbard. Portions of the second floor had already burned away and the remaining floor was hot, indicating fire was burning in the space between the floor and the first story ceiling.
“They could tell there was fire all around them,” said Hubbard. Firefighters retreated and changed to an exterior attack to contain the fire to the single structure and keep the fire from spreading to neighboring businesses, including Scoops Ice Cream and Coffee to the west and Affordable Used Appliances to the east. Those businesses appeared to have been spared from the fire itself but may have suffered damage from smoke and the water used to douse the fire.
Crews were on the scene for more than six hours putting out hot spots, and hot spots continued to flare through Saturday.
The building until recently housed C&C Motor Sports on the ground floor and Revival Grays Harbor had its offices on the second floor, but Hubbard said the building was vacant at the time. Fire crews searched the building and said it appeared nobody was inside at the time of the fire. No injuries have been reported to firefighters or civilians.
The fire appears to have started on the second floor, said Hubbard. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
The building and its contents are considered a total loss with an estimated value of $240,000. A total of 24 personnel responded with five engines, one ladder truck, a command vehicle and four ambulances responding, with assistance from Grays Harbor Fire District 2 and the Hoquiam Fire Department.
