Events planned to celebrate Kurt Cobain’s birthday

In honor of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s birthday on Feb 20, Westport Winery has many events planned.

Cobain was born in Aberdeen on Feb. 20, 1967, and died by suicide in Seattle on April 5, 1994.

On Feb. 23, from 3 to 5 p.m., Dani Bacon, one of the co-founders of The Music Project will be talking about their Grunge Museum located in Aberdeen, WA, in the sunroom of the Sea Glass Grill at Westport Winery Garden Resort. She will offer insights about this project and what is next. The Bacon’s opened the museum in 2024, but their adventure began when they purchased the Cobain Family Home in 2018, with the idea of preserving it for fans.

The museum has a strong focus on the grunge music era, what inspired the artists and why their music struck so deeply in the hearts of their fans, according to a news release.

Lee and Dani opened the museum in 2024, but their adventure began when they purchased the Cobain family home with the idea of preserving it, but without a specific plan.

Guests will get a look behind the scenes at the evolution and future of the museum.

UNPLUGGED is open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 121 W. Wishkah St. in Aberdeen.

Call Westport Winery at 360-648-2224 to register for the lecture. While it is free, registering is requested by organizers, though walk-ins and all ages are welcome.

In 2009, Westport Winery hosted its first lecture on Cobain. At that time, his grandfather, Leland, was able to share his memories. Leland has since died, but his co-presenter, Jeff Burlingame will return to Westport Winery on Sunday, March 23, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Burlingame is a NAACP Image Award-winning author of more than 30 books, and also a former reporter at The Daily World. He will be signing his most recent book, a biography for teens and adults titled “Kurt Cobain: Oh Well, Whatever, Nevermind.”

He also will sign two of his other titles: “George Varnell: The Life and Times of a Pioneering Sportsman,” and “Moon Olympic Peninsula,” which has been the No. 1 Olympic Peninsula book in the U.S. for 10 years.

All the books can be purchased at the event, or attendees can bring their own copies for signing by the award-winning local author.

No reservations are required for Burlingame’s book signing.

Westport Winery’s first pinot noir, released in 2008, was called Pinot Noirvana. As time went on, and they explored different grape varietals, the wine’s name evolved to Nirvana.

This month, the winery is tying those two stories together as they release their latest vintage of Nirvana. This new creation is a white sparkling pinot noir. It is a celebratory wine created in homage to the community’s musical impact on the world by Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, the members of Nirvana.

Follow Westport Winery on Facebook and Instagram to learn the upcoming release date of Nirvana, the sparkling white pinot noir.

To add to the remembrance, the International Mermaid Museum is releasing a new T-shirt named Mir-vana.

More information regarding the Mir-vana shirt and when it will be available will be released soon.

Westport Winery Garden Resort, home of Ocean’s Daughter Distillery, the Sea Glass Grill and the International Mermaid Museum, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the restaurant and winery tasting room open until 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings.
