The Montesano Fire Department and Grays Harbor County Fire District 2 responded to a call shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday as a fire broke out at the Grays Harbor County jail in Montesano which necessitated the evacuation of personnel and inmates due to the proliferation of smoke throughout the building.
Staff and inmates were transported to a nearby location for medical evaluation.
All inmates were cleared and returned to the jail shortly after noon, while two corrections officers were transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
According to a press release issued by the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, the fire started in a clothes dryer in the basement and was quickly extinguished. No significant damage occurred to the facility. Numerous agencies throughout Grays Harbor County responded to the incident.
