Fire burns cedar business in Hoquiam

Hoquiam and Aberdeen respond

A Hoquiam business that builds cedar outdoor furniture and was once the site of a cedar mill suffered extensive damage in an early morning fire Wednesday that drew firefighters from Hoquiam and Aberdeen.

The fire was in the 1100 block of the Fifth Street Extension.

At about 4:30 a.m., Hoquiam Police responded to the area for a burglary alarm and discovered a fire fully engulfing a building. Multiple fire units responded from Hoquiam and Aberdeen.

Hoquiam police said early this morning that no one is believed to have been inside.

The building suffered extensive damage, according to police, who said that due to the commercial structure and possible magnitude of the loss, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is sending agents to help in the investigation. Fire and Police personnel will remain at the scene during the day and the roadway is expected to be closed for most of Wednesday.
