Food Ball 2020 kicks off this Friday

Aberdeen and Hoquiam high schools join forces for fundraising effort

Aberdeen and Hoquiam high schools have announced the schedule of events for Food Ball 2020, a joint fundraising effort supporting local food banks in each town.

The event, which is normally a spirited contest between the two schools featuring many events aimed at seeing which can raise the most food and donations during the fall prep football season. Pandemic restrictions will curtail most of the usual events, but the two schools are proceeding with a pandemic virtual version this year. It kicked off at 5 p.m. on Friday as ASB students from both schools were scheduled to drive through Aberdeen and Hoquiam, including passing by both schools.

A Virtual Auction is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5 followed by a Virtual Movie Trivia event at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6. A Virtual Luncheon will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8.

Donations will be accepted through Monday, Nov. 9, when the joint fundraising total will be announced live from the Grays Harbor PUD at 5 p.m. and broadcast on KXRO (101.7 FM).

In last year’s Food Ball, the equivalent of 1,754,353 pounds of food was collected in total to benefit food banks in Hoquiam and Aberdeen. Some of that came in the form of actual groceries and some in monetary donations and a formula that awards a certain number of pounds for each dollar.

Food donations are accepted at several locations in the area: The Department of Licensing, Grocery Outlet, Safeway, Swanson’s (Hoquiam) and Rite Aid (Hoquiam).
