Students can score free school supplies at the third annual Back to School Marketplace this Monday at the D&R Event Center from from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Aberdeen.
Organized by Harbor City Church, more than 1,000 donated backpacks, along with clothes, shoes and other supplies will be up for grabs for students in grades K through 12.
The event has moved this year from the church to the D&R Event Center at the corner of Heron and I Streets in order to serve more people. Harbor City Pastor Doug Cotton said this year they’re prepared to serve up to 1,500 people if they need to.
“Last year we had just under 1,000 people, and it was really more than our church could handle,” said Cotton.
Cotton noted that in previous years the waiting lines to receive supplies have built up hours before the event starts.
All of the items donated are either new or very lightly used.
Aside from school supplies, the event will also be more of a festival this year, and will close off the section of South I Street next to the D&R Theatre while it runs Monday evening.
There will be free pizza, hot dogs and cotton candy, and attractions like game stations, a bouncy house, and a free haircut station.
Organizer Christy Schmauss said they are still in need of children’s new or used clothing for the Marketplace, and will be taking donations for it until 1 p.m. on Friday. The other organizers are Shae-Lynn Ramsey, Will Schmauss, Laney Mortimeyer and Beca Wharton.
The church is located at 1700 Cherry St., and by phone at 360-532-3355. They also take financial donations and will be shopping to complete their supplies for Monday’s event.
