Grays Harbor College’s rendition of the classic 1993 film Groundhog Day promises to delight audiences as Groundhog Day the Musical begins its two-weekend run at the Bishop Center for Performing Arts this Friday, March 7.
The story follows the plight of Phil Connors, an arrogant Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during an assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day again and again — until he learns to become a decent human being.
Parental discretion is advised as some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. Adult themes include strong language, sexuality, suicide and intense situations. This show also features strobe lighting, prop gunshots, fog and haze.
Directed by Dr. Andrew Gaines, Theatre and Communications instructor at Grays Harbor College, the production showcases exceptional local talent. The show features a live orchestra under the direction of Dr. Bill Dyer, choreography of Dr. Gaines and Tamara Helland, vocal direction of Kari Hasbrouck and technical direction of Art Oestreich.
Behind the scenes, the creative team on Groundhog Day the Musical spared no effort in creating a visually stunning set, lighting and a litany of handmade props.
The cast, crew and pit orchestra have been preparing for opening night since auditions were held in November. More recently, the focus has shifted to promotion as cast members and volunteers distributed signage throughout Grays Harbor and Pacific counties.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for students and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at ghc.edu/bishop, by calling 360-538-4066, or at the Box Office before the show (the Bishop Center encourages purchasing tickets online to help the show start on time). Grays Harbor College students plus one guest can get free admission by bringing their student ID cards to the Box Office 30 minutes before the show.
