Historic Hoquiam Memories expands for second year

Last year’s Historic Hoquiam Memories was such a success, organizer Connie Parson is doing it again.

“I’m hoping the first one wasn’t a fluke,” she said. “I was only expecting maybe 50, 75 people to come out (last year), but 273 signed the guest book!”

The second annual event will be held Saturdayfrom 1 to 5 p.m. at Emerson Manor, 703 Simpson Ave. That’s the home of the Hoquiam Senior Center, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Displays will include pictures and memorabilia from Emerson Manor as well as other historic buildings, families and organizations in Hoquiam. More than 20 exhibitors will be on hand to show everything from auto memorabilia to local genealogy to a massive scale model of the logging process. The collections are primarily for show, and won’t be for sale.

Live demonstrations are being added this year, showcasing some of the crafts used by the early settlers of this area. The Schafer Fiber Arts Guild will show how spinning wheels were used to make thread and yarn, and the Quinault Basket Weavers will display their skills.

Parson said the inspiration came about two years ago from friends who wanted her to show off her collection of memorabilia, leading her to assemble various exhibitors to join in what she calls a “sharing of history.”

“The manager said ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if someone gave a history on the manor, since it used to be a five-star hotel?’” said Parson.

Other attractions include representatives from Grays Harbor Geneology, who will help people check their family history, and an oral history of the area by the Polson Museum. The Hoquiam Push Rods will also be there to show off classic old school cars, and the Polson Museum will be selling tickets for its annual “red car” raffle.

Admission is free. For more information, contact Parson at 360-591-9752. The Facebook event mentions that Parson is looking for someone to film video footage of the exhibitors.
