Hoquiam outlasts Seton Catholic, 50-47

VANCOUVER — It took overtime, but Hoquiam edged Seton Catholic, 50-47, in a District IV 1A game at Seton Catholic on Friday.

In a game with more than 10 lead changes, where neither team led by more than five points, the Grizzlies (8-12) were led by 15 points from senior Casey Mode, which included some heroics in the extra time. Mode had three 3-pointers in the game, but none bigger than a trey with Hoquiam down by two and just more than a minute left on the clock. A few moments after she cashed in from downtown, Mode blocked a putback by the Cougars to keep the Grizzlies up by two and help secure the victory.

With the victory, Hoquiam will move on in the winner’s bracket and face Montesano on Tuesday at Montesano.

“Talk about an intense game,” Hoquiam coach Mark Maxfield said. “We were down by five in the fourth quarter and came back and tied it. It was one of those never die situations for this team and it is nice to see they are coming together.”

Both teams looked as if they had found their rhythm offensively in the third quarter with Hoquiam putting up 17 points and the Cougars notching 16 points, but the game turned into a defensive struggle in the fourth quarter. Both teams managed just five points each in the fourth and failed to convert on possessions late in regulation.

In addition to what Maxfield said was a “career game” for Mode, Hoquiam’s Brandi Parson added nine points, while Izzy Hernandez pulled down 13 rebounds. Rylee Vonhof added seven points, seven rebounds and five blocks for the Grizzlies.
