Two set plays allowed Hoquiam to knock home two goals and open the door to the postseason on Thursday night.
A long throw-in in the first half and a corner kick in the second half set up the host Grizzlies’ two goals and set up a furious last 20 minutes of this Evergreen 1A League match with Tenino before winning, 2-1, at Olympic Stadium.
On Senior Night, senior Alexis Wonderly and Judy Renteria scores for Hoquiam (4-4, 7-9). Rhian Mathis got one goal back for Tenino (3-5, 7-7-2), which was playing for a tiebreaker game for that third and final district berth the Grizzlies secured.
On Tuesday, Hoquiam will open the district tournament in a loser-out contest at Seton Catholic in Vancouver. The winner will move on to Thursday’s winner-to-state games at King’s Way Christian in Vancouver.
“I try not to speak too much of it, because I treat every match as the most important, but (sophomore captain) Maya Jump spoke to the girls and really fired them up to this opportunity,” HHS head coach Drew Grannemann said. “The girls knew this was Senior Night and it was important for those girls in their final match at Olympic Stadium to make an impact. They knew what was on the line and they played like it was an elimination game.”
Tenino had Hoquiam’s defense jumping in the opening minutes with runs down the wings on long balls. However, the Beavers’ accuracy was lacking on running one-touch shots at the Grizzlies’ goal.
Hoquiam had to deal with a seven-man defensive unit inside the penalty area for the first 20-plus minutes. However, Tenino’s defensive plan went out the window when the Grizzlies scored the match’s opening goal in the 26th minute.
From the right win, freshman Taylor Strom’s long throw-in went into the penalty area. The ball went through traffic and out to the top of the penalty area, where Wonderly ran onto it from 20 yards out. Wonderly’s show was struck firm, low and away from goalkeeper Maria Collins, slipping into the net in the low left corner for the score.
Renteria, senior Casey Mode and freshman Maggie Mazariegos each had chances on goal for Hoquiam in the final 10-plus minutes of the first half, but couldn’t convert.
Sophomore Maya Jump made the save of the game for Hoquiam in the 54th minute. When goalkeeper Jade Cox came out too far on Tenino’s Onalyz Babcock run and Babcock shot toward the goal. The ball wasn’t struck hard enough, allowing Jump to run in and clear the ball off the goal line to save the shutout.
Renteria, who spent most of the match filling in gaps from the defensive unit, midfield corps and front-line runs, got her chance to score in the 62nd minute. On a corner kick, the ball deflected off a Tenino defender to Renteria at the top of the penalty area. The senior hit a low lazer shot froze Collins as it skipped into the net inside the right post at 2-0.
Tenino made the final moments interesting when Mathis struck a hard 30-yard shot that went over Cox’s head into the net in the 72nd minute.
“In soccer, the worst score you can have is 2-0; in most scenarios, you are going to give up one goal and then all of the momentum is gone,” Grannemann said. “It hasn’t been an easy season. It has been rough and tumble and muddy and wet. It has been a fight for every 80 minutes. Fortunately, we came out on top tonight.”
Seniors Renteria, Emma Skinner, Mode, Bianca Lopez and Wonderly were honored at halftime in a Senior Night ceremony.
