Joint response rapidly knocks down Aberdeen house fire

The call came in Thursday morning

Firefighters from Aberdeen and Hoquiam mobilized Thursday morning to handle a house fire in the hills north of Aberdeen.

The initial call for a structure fire on Chilton Road came in just before 9 a.m. when residents were alerted by a smoke alarm of the fire, said Aberdeen Fire Chief Dave Golding in an interview on the scene.

“Smoke upstairs in the residence with smoke alarms going off,” Golding said. “Crews arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the window of the second floor. They found a fire in the bedroom.”

About 15 firefighters from Aberdeen and Hoquiam responded, with three engines and three ambulances, Golding said. The fire itself didn’t have many complications, Golding said.

“It was actually a pretty straightforward structure fire,” Golding said. “This is a pretty good example of how a working smoke alarm in the house can give early notification and save the lives of the occupants.”

No injuries to residents or firefighters occurred during the fire, Golding said, as the department’s morning got busier even as units were fighting the fire.

“As we got this call, we actually had three calls come out right after,” Golding said. “We were able to get those handled with our mutual aid agreements.”

The cause and origin of the fire is unknown, Golding said.
