The Oregon man shot by an Aberdeen Police officer Thursday remains in the hospital in stable condition, said Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Brad Johansson on Monday morning.
The suspect, a 51-year-old man from Redmond, Oregon, was not known to local authorities. His name will not be released until he is released from the hospital and charged, said Johansson.
The incident started as a hit-and-run near the Bank of Pacific on East Market Street shortly before noon Thursday, Oct. 24. A responding officer made contact with the suspect in the 500 block of East First Street, and witnesses described hearing the officer demanding the suspect “drop the knife,” said Johansson. The suspect continued to approach the officer and was shot, and a knife was recovered near the suspect, said Johansson. The officer was not injured, nor were the occupants of the other car in the original hit-and-run incident.
The investigation is being conducted by the Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team, which is made up of detectives from Mason, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Lewis and Thurston counties.
