An hours-long manhunt ended when a suspect who allegedly fired a gun at family members in a domestic dispute surrendered early Thursday in East County, Grays Harbor Undersheriff Brad Johansson said.
About 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a man firing a gun on the 200 block of Sand Creek Road, about 2 miles southwest of McCleary.
There was a domestic dispute at a residence between family members, Johansson said. As the victims were leaving in a vehicle, the suspect fired a rifle at them.
Nobody was injured. All parties left the scene on foot, Johansson said. When deputies arrived, they realized they had an armed suspect unaccounted for, so they called in help from the county Critical Response Unit. The CRU is a multi-agency team that responds to potentially violent situations, similar to what is commonly known as SWAT teams.
A Washington State Patrol plane equipped with thermal imaging sensors also was dispatched to search the area.
Several nearby homes were evacuated while officers tried to contain the area.
The CRU personnel eventually approached the house in an armored vehicle. They were able to communicate with the subject, who was inside the house. He surrendered around 1:15 a.m. Thursday.
A search warrant was executed and several firearms were seized from inside the house, Johansson said.
The suspect is being held at the Grays Harbor County jail on a charge of first degree assault domestic violence.
The CRU consists of members of the Aberdeen, Cosmopolis, Hoquiam and Montesano police departments and the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office.
