Mocrocks, Copalis beaches open for New Year’s Eve razor clam dig

19 tentative evening digs scheduled throughout January, February

Looking for a healthy New Year’s Eve alternative? Razor clam diggers can mark the year’s end with a dig scheduled Saturday evening at Copalis and Mocrocks beaches.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife approved the dig after marine toxin tests confirmed the clams on those two beaches are safe to eat.

The best digging typically occurs one to two hours before low tide, said Dan Ayres, coastal shellfish manager, noting that digging is not allowed at any open beach before noon. The New Year’s Eve tide is a minus 0.4 at 7:57 p.m. Bundle up. The forecast calls for rain and temperatures in the low 40s.

The state recently announced a series of tentative digs on 19 dates through the first two months of 2017. The first is at Kalaloch, Jan. 8-9, with afternoon low tides at 3:11 p.m. and 4:08 p.m. Evening digs are scheduled for Jan. 13-15 and 27-31, and Feb. 7-12 and 24-26. The Jan. 27-28 dig is for Copalis only; Feb. 10-12 is for Mocrocks only. Both beaches are open the other dates listed here.

Under state law, diggers at open beaches can take 15 razor clams per day and are required to keep the first 15 they dig. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. All diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable 2016-17 fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach.

Licenses, ranging from a three-day razor clam license to an annual combination fishing license, are available online at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov and from license vendors around the state.
