Multiple agencies battle Grant Street structure fire

A two-alarm fire on Grant Street in Aberdeen on Wednesday, Oct. 27, caused extensive damage to an Aberdeen home, and was one of several calls that kept Aberdeen-area firefighters busy.

Responders from the Aberdeen and Hoquiam fire departments were dispatched to the home in the 400 block of Grant Street at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 27.

”Upon arrival, units found a 1.5 story house with a large amount of smoke venting from the roof with heavy fire venting from the attached garage,” said Aberdeen Battalion Chief Kelly Niemi. “A motorhome parked next to the structure was also on fire. The fire had spread to an adjacent occupied home causing damage to the siding, which was quickly extinguished as part of the initial on-scene operations.”

A second alarm was called and a total of 11 Aberdeen firefighters, six Hoquiam firefighters, and two Grays Harbor Fire District 2 firefighters responded to the scene in one command unit, five engines and three ambulances. Niemi said the fire took approximately three hours to bring under control, with additional units remaining on-scene throughout the night. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

It was yet another busy day for firefighters from all three agencies, with multiple calls coming in throughout the day, and during the Grant Street fire.

“During fire ground operations multiple emergency medical calls for service were managed in both Aberdeen and Hoquiam by fire department personnel who had been recalled to the fire stations,” said Niemi.

Fire District 2 had a full day. In the afternoon, firefighters responded to a stranded kayaker on the Middle Satsop River, assisting the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Department in safely retrieving him and his dog off the river. Shortly after that, a District 2 engine assisted with the Grant Street fire. While on the scene, an additional fire broke out in Aberdeen, and the District 2 engine responded to that call as well.
